Chiang Mai Gay bars - Chang Phuak and Santitham area :

The Chang Phuak area in the North West part of the city is the major gay area of Chiang Mai where all of the larger gay venues are located.  All of the places mentioned below are close together within walking distance or a short Tuk Tuk ride.

This area is the most sophisticated area of town popular with ex-pats and Thai yuppies and professionals.  The venues here are all upmarket, and classier but with higher prices.

Gay Bars in Chiang Mai Night Bazzar Area :

The Night Bazzar area is Chiang Mai's main tourist location. A few years ago it was a popular part of the Chiang Mai gay scene with more than fifteen bars there. But, times have changed and the best of the entertainment is now to be found in the Chang Puek/Santitham areas. The few remaining venues are small outdoor beer bars for the tourist market.

Thapae soi 1: Opposite rear entrance to D2 Hotel, a row of small outdoor bars adjacent to the "Foxy lady" bar. Chiang Mai's notorious Sleaze Alley; a few commercial beer bars with freelance hustlers (Mainly straight Akha and Lisu hilltribe guys - check for ID - some of the guys here are not as old as they claim). Several bars have closed recently - only two are open now, Milky Way and Twin Peaks (under new ownership but still has the old sign). CU Bar and Secrets Bar moved to a new location adjacent to the old alley (see Above)

AT YOUR OWN RISK - the boys that hang around the Night Bazaar are freelancers; they might be cheaper than going to a go-go bar or Karaoke but you have no recourse if things go wrong and they often do not have ID. Also gang fights, problems with drugs and assaults on foreigners have been reported here. Caveat Emptor.

Thapae soi 1: around the now defunct Peak Climbing wall (destroyed by a fire on 1 Jan 2008) was a popular group of small open air beer bars, The Peak is being re-developed and all of the remaining bars have closed down in November 2009.
